[Grisaia no Kajitsu] EP1 – Ordinary Academy Life

Originally published 10/11/2014
Hi everyone! It’s been a long time since my last post. The usual reasons like always. But anyways… onto Grisaia!

Mihama Academy—on the surface, a closed learning environment established to nurture students who find themselves at odds with the world around them; in actuality, an orchard-cum-prison built to preserve fruit that has fallen too far from its tree.

Whatever the circumstances behind its establishment, Mihama Academy is at present home to five female students, all with their own reasons for “enrollment.” For better or worse, each girl has established a routine obliging of her current situation; life moves at an idle, yet accommodating pace within the walls of Mihama.

Yet with the arrival of the institute’s first male student, the nearly preposterously opaque Kazami Yuuji, the students at Mihama begin to fall out of step with their predetermined rhythms. Will Yuuji prove to be the element the girls around him needed to take hold of their lives once more, or will the weight of their pasts prove too steep a wall to overcome?

And in the first place, just who is Kazami Yuuji? While the true nature of the “job” he is wont to alight to at the most haphazard of moments remains shrouded in secrecy, one thing is for certain—his encroachment upon the quiet orchard known as Mihama Academy will prove itself momentous in one way or another. And of course, one cannot discount the possibility that perhaps Yuuji himself carries the weightiest past of any of the students…

Grisaia no Kajitsu is one of my favorite VNs and now there’s an anime adaptation of the VN. Of course there are always drawbacks to adaptations, but once in a while there are successful ones like Clannad, Fate/stay night, and a few others. Some limitations include: censorship of content and H, removal of many scenes to allot for the time limitation, and unfaithfulness to the original work.

So how did the first episode of the anime fair against it’s original work? Read on to find out.

Note: Minor spoilers and NSFW content (at the bottom, with an additional warning). You have been warned!

Right away, I noticed the amount of content that was cut out from the first few days of Yuugi’s school life. We didn’t get to see Yuuji beat up a criminal, we didn’t get to see Amane getting chased by a bug, and the character introduction scenes were overall shortened. Unfortunately we don’t get to hear as much of Yuuji’s inner thoughts and feelings because of the time restraint, but the anime did manage to put enough of it in in towards the end. I remember in the VN, we get to see Yuuji carefully examining his environment for entrances, exits, and any possible ways of entry into the dorm. Unfortunately the anime doesn’t cover that part.

I really liked that they kept the BGM music from the VN as its OST is one of my favorites from a VN. Of course in the Anime, the music is even more background than in the VN since it only gets played maybe once per episode instead of looping in the VN.

Overall the animation quality is pretty good and one of the things that I liked most about it was the animation of the characters themselves. Since the VN is limited in motion of the characters, it was really refreshing to see the characters move around and interact with each other. Of course this happens in every anime but it’s different when I’m watching one of my favorite VNs being animated. The slow motion scene of Amane jumping onto Makina, and Michiru’s Tsundere act and jumping onto the desk were some scenes that particularly stood out to me as being outstanding.
The backgrounds in the anime were well done and true to the source. Its good to see that the animation team put a lot of work into the smaller details of the anime.

Because this is an anime, there’s no explicit H (or at least I don’t expect any). So instead of H, we get a bunch of fanservice and pantsu shots instead (examples shown on the bottom of the post). I think they could have tone down on it a little bit, unless it was already in the VN in the first place. It kind of detracts from the overall story of Grisaia. Yes, it’s an eroge but the main story is supposed to be about the dark pasts of the girls and drama rather than a harem/romance.

That being said though, I thought that the first episode of Grisaia did a pretty good job at introducing the characters despite the shortened length, and the environment of Mihama Academy. Having read the VN, the actions and words of Amane and Sachi made a lot of sense when they first introduced themselves to Yuuji.

Finally, the last few minutes of the episode foreshadowed the events that would happen later in the VN/Anime. It’s a great hook for those who are new to Grisaia, as it gives the new viewers a glimpse of the true nature of Grisaia’s story and the dark pasts of the girls. From this scene, I expect the anime to cover all five characters routes in perhaps two seasons. Grisaia is actually a trilogy and the way that I think the anime adaptation will handle it is:

Probably similar to how Key handled the Clannad anime adaptation. Yuuji will resolve everyone’s problems via story arcs but he won’t have any romantic interests since the story will eventually have to move onto Meikyuu (where all the characters’ problems are resolved behind the scenes and Yuuji opts for a promotion with his company). At least that’ll make the most logical sense for a smooth transition.

Anyways, I’m really looking forward to episode 2 and the rest of the season. It’s my first time actually watching an anime as it is airing, so it’s a new and exciting experience for me! For those who haven’t read the VN, I highly recommend reading it before watching the anime. It’s quite long, but you have the time while waiting between episodes!

4.5/5 – Excellent. Worth a watch for both fans of the VN and newcomers.
