[2005] Swan Song – A short review

Originally published 6/10/2014
My 22nd Visual Novel. I actually finished this a while ago, but never got to writing a review on it!

It is a snowing Christmas Eve… Everything seems so peaceful when a huge earthquake occurs. The earthquake causes the city to be in ruin, and the surviving people need to find ways to stay alive. Some go crazy and rob others, some cling onto God, some gather to live together. The 6 main characters meet at a church while they were trying to find shelter from the snow. What will they see and experience in this extreme situation…?

I’ll keep this one short, as it has been a while and my memories of everything isn’t as clear as it was a couple months back. Spoiler free!

Story – 4.5/5
Ultimately Swan Song is a character centric story that focuses on how the main six characters work together to cope with the harsh environment and hopelessness of their situation. It would be quite scary to imagine if I had to live in such a world. In addition, the story deals with themes such as human nature, religion, hope, despair, and evil in a way that is quite believable. Swan Song is probably one of the most dark stories that I’ve experienced in a VN.

Characters & Voice acting- 5/5
Highly believable and human-like. Out of the six main characters, there’s somebody that each one of us can relate to in some way. As the story progresses, we get to see how each character develops in his or her own way; sometimes for the worse. Although Tsukasa and Takuma are the main protagonists of Swan Song, the narrator is often switched between the other 4 main characters as well. We get to see just what each character is thinking, and come to understand how they are feeling, as well as the justification of their actions. The choice of voice actors for the characters were very fitting and quite convincing of their character. I believe each characters’ lines were voiced in Swan Song, including Tsukasa’s and Takuma’s.

CG/Art – 4.5/5
The artist of the VN did an excellent job in portraying of the harsh environment of the world. Despite all the violent scenes of murder and rape, there are plenty of cheerful scenes as well, each drawn well and adding to the overall feel of the scenes.

The beauty of chaos

The calm beginnings
Music – 4/5
Overall the music was pretty good in setting the mood and tension for the story. There were actually a couple of scenes involving Tsukasa and Yuka that were particularly heartwarming, accompanied by a piano piece called “Fragments of Night”. Otherwise the acoustic guitar tracks were very nice.

Overall – 9/10

I really enjoyed reading through Swan Song, as it was a drastic change from the typical novel that I’m used to reading. There’s no more to be had in this novel as it is quite violent and dark. Be warned, it is very graphic! There are quite a few H scenes and rape in this VN. The only thing I feel like that could have been done better was the True ending. With all the scenes leading up to the end, I felt like the “normal” ending was much more appropriate and fitting.

Otherwise… highly recommended read!
